Think You Know All About the 50’s? – 2 Trivias

In trivia on October 27, 2010 at 7:03 pm

The 1950s was one of my favorite movie eras. Black-and-white was crisp and nice. Yet color was there too. And it was bright red, bright blue. There were musicals and mysteries, westerns and sci-fi flicks. It was a great time for American moviegoers.

Here are 2 1950’s movie factoids I bet you didn’t know.

1. Danny Kaye was a popular actor who became a household name after starring in The Kid from Brooklyn and The Secret Life of Danny Kaye for the way he could perform tongue-twisting songs and monologues. But did you know that his name was really David Daniel Kaminski? (His parents emigrated from the Ukraine 3 years earlier.)

2. The good-times What’s My Line? question-and-answer show featured a number of celebrities. Each Sunday at 10:30 p.m. the best names in Hollywood would appear before 4 blind-folded panelists who would ask questions and try to figure who he or she was. It was a proper black-tie affair. And it was fun. Do you remember the name of the host? John (Charles) Daly.

Aaah… The Honeymooners

Jackie Gleason once said that Art Carney was 90 percent responsible for the success of the weekly half-hour TV show in 1955. Although the situation comedy, based on the popular ’51-’55 skits of the same name, were an initial success (#2 in ratings), competition (from the likes of Perry Como) forced it down to 19th place by year’s end. The show was canceled. But the episodes have gone on to rerun kingdom, being known as the Classic 39.

Here are a few pictures of the famous Mr. C.

A Squirt of the Wise: 7 New Uses for An Old Fruit

In cleaning tips on October 26, 2010 at 6:43 pm

Lemons really get a bad wrap. They do. They’re tart, have seeds and are a weird shape. And they’re yellow. (Did I mention that’s my least favorite color?)

But I wasn’t always this tart. When I was young I used to be a real sucker. Whenever I went to a seafood restaurant, the first thing I would do when my platter arrived was (yes, you guessed it) suck on it. I was probably the only customer who did. But I didn’t care. I was there to have a good time.

Now today I avoid lemon juice altogether because I learned the citric acid was a big no-no for my tooth enamel (translation: not a good thing for people with sensitive teeth. That’s funny – I always thought ice cream caused my childhood toothaches… this could be another which-came-first-the-chicken-or-the-egg conundrum…).

Anyway, here are I think about 7 new uses for lemons that I just found from Real Simple Magazine (you can read the rest here):

Lemon Use #1: Make Your Whites Whiter (without using Clorox)

Add 1/4 – 1/2 cup of lemon juice (depending on the load size and whitening desired) to wash cycle as you would with Clorox.

Lemon Use #2: Soothe Your Aching Throat

The trick is to concoct your own gooey throat lozenge. You can do this by cutting the lemon in half (in the center). Skewer over open flame or on high electric stove until the peel starts to brown (this warms the juice). Squeeze lemon juice into 1 teaspoon of honey and mix.

Lemon Use #3: Brighten your Hair

This is perhaps the easiest. Cut 2 lemons in half and simmer in 2 cups water for an hour (add more water as you wish). Then strain and pour into a little spray bottle (travel plastics are fine for this.) (Okay, the mix-up isn’t, but the application is.) Just spray onto your hair before spending time in the sun (i.e., mowing, fishing, walking). Apply daily until you reach your desired lightness.

Lemon Use #4: Prevent Browning

Preserve the look of freshly cut apples and pears by squeezing a little of this wonder juice over them.

Lemon Use #5: Add Homespun Appeal (okay, I’ll admit – that does sound a bit hokey)

But with today’s new retro obsession (i.e., Jonas Brothers), these citrusy darlings can zest up an otherwise drab and dreary room. And the primary color thing fits with the fling back to the glory days of red everything.

Lemon Use #6: Hold your Toothpicks

Unless you live in the South, you probably won’t know what a toothpick is (it’s that thang we hicks chew on when we’re listening real hard!). Just kidding. But it is a cute, chubby collector that does the trick when you entertain. (Think card games when you have meat and cheese bites or a fruit brunch.)

Lemon Use #7: Clean your Cutting Board

Lemons can even remove stains from your cutting board – IF it is WOOD or PLASTIC. All you have to do is squeeze the juice out. Then give it a good rub – as if you were trying to wear the lemon down. Let stand for 20 minutes and clean as normal. (Now you know why the Food Network is so popular.) Not only does it clean stains, it always replaces putrid odors like  fish, onions and garlic with the clean smell of a lemon grove. Yum.

5 Fast Facts about Lucille Ball – Did you know….?

In trivia on October 26, 2010 at 3:21 pm

Lucille Ball is a comedic icon. After starring in dozens of movies and spending a decade on air in her own TV series with hubby Desi Arnaz, she achieved the one tangible proof that she was in fact a star: first name household recognition.

Wow. And that was before color TV, cell phones or ipods. The CD hadn’t even been imagined yet. So that was a pretty big deal.

Even if you don’t watch Lucy today in 2010, you still know who that crazy red-head was back in the polka-dot-tea-length dresses. The one with the wild look – Lucy.

5 Facts Betcha didn’t Know about the Queen of Comedy: LUCILLE BALL

Lucy was really a brunette (“mouse” brown, according to her).

Lucy and Desi had 3 miscarriages in 1942, 1949 and 1950, respectively, before they started the I Love Lucy Show in 1951.

Lucy was the first cover picture for TV Guide magazine in 1953. She posed with Desi Jr. (aka “Little Ricky”).

Lucy had 2 children with hubby Desi, named them Desi Jr. and Lucie.

Lucy thought the letters “A” and “R” brought her good luck. Her career changed when she changed her last name to ARnaz. Her character names reflected this. Lucy RicARdo (I Love Lucy), Lucy CARmichael (The Lucy Show), Lucy CARter (Here’s Lucy); and Lucy BARker (Life with Lucy).

Okay, so maybe they weren’t the shortest facts, but they are Lucy… so who cares?!

In a Funk

In ramblings on October 26, 2010 at 2:13 pm

Okay, last night was a bit annoying. Have you ever had your hand or arm fall asleep while… er… sleeping? Well, yes, I have too – occasionally. But the last several nights I’ve seemed to accomplish this awful feat at least once. And last night? An amazing twice (left and right hand)! I don’t know if this is normal or not, but I definitely want it to stop!!

Spooky Wicked Halloween Cupcakes Recipe

With Halloween a mere handful of days away, I just had to share this wicked good recipe for spooky cupcakes. It is from the Food Network, so the directions are a bit complicated but accurate – definitely well worth the effort for a ghoulish party.

Wicked Cupcakes

From Food Network Kitchens

Prep Time: 45 min
Inactive Prep Time: 1 hr 0 min
Cook Time: 25 min
Level: Intermediate
Serves: 12 cupcakes, 2 cups frosting

Ingredients Cupcakes:

* 1 1/2 ounces fine-quality semisweet chocolate, chopped
* 1/4 cups prune juice
* 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
* 3/4 cup sugar
* 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
* 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
* 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
* 1/4 teaspoons salt
* 1 large egg
* 1 large egg yolk
* 1/3 cup buttermilk
* 1/4 cup vegetable oil
* 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Frosting:

* 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
* 1 cup peanut butter (smooth or chunky)
* 4-ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
* 4 cups confectioners’ sugar
* 2 tablespoons milk
* 1 drop food coloring (green), optional
* Chocolate wafer cookies
* Licorice strips
* Toasted coconut
* Small candies
* Special equipment: 12 (1/2-cup) muffin cups with paper liners

Directions

For the cupcakes: Position a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 300 degrees F. Set liners in muffin cups.

Put the chocolate and prune juice in a microwave safe bowl. Heat in the microwave on low power, stirring occasionally, until completely melted.

Whisk the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. In another bowl, beat the egg and yolk with an electric hand mixer at high speed until slightly thick and lemon colored, about 3 minutes. Slowly add buttermilk, oil, vanilla, and melted chocolate mixture to eggs, beating until thoroughly combined. Add the flour mixture and beat until just combined.

Divide the batter among muffin tins, filling them 1/2 of the way. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cupcakes comes out clean and the tops spring back when pressed gently, about 25 minutes. Cool the cupcakes in the tin on a rack for 10 minutes then remove from the tin and cool completely.

For the frosting: Beat the butter, peanut butter, and cream cheese in a large bowl with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Gradually add the confectioners’ sugar and milk mixing until the frosting is smooth. Add food coloring as desired. Refrigerate the frosting until firm.
