Jackie Gleason once said that Art Carney was 90 percent responsible for the success of the weekly half-hour TV show in 1955. Although the situation comedy, based on the popular ’51-’55 skits of the same name, were an initial success (#2 in ratings), competition (from the likes of Perry Como) forced it down to 19th place by year’s end. The show was canceled. But the episodes have gone on to rerun kingdom, being known as the Classic 39.
